How websites detect temporary email

Many signup forms compare the domain of an email address with lists of known temporary email domains. If the domain matches, the form may refuse it, ask for another address or limit what the account can do. Some websites also check whether a domain can receive mail at all.

These lists change often, so the same address may be accepted by one website and rejected by another.

Why websites do it

Most reasons come down to reaching you later and limiting abuse.

  • To send password resets, receipts and security alerts to an address that will keep working.
  • To stop the same person from claiming a free trial or signup bonus repeatedly.
  • To reduce fake accounts, spam and fraud.
  • To protect their sending reputation, because mail to expired addresses bounces.

What to do when your address is rejected

Respect the decision. If a website requires a lasting address, give it one you control, such as your main email or a forwarding alias you can switch off later. Disguising a temporary address breaks the website’s rules, and it would leave the account without a working recovery address once the inbox expires.

If the website accepts the address but no message arrives, work through the checklist for missing verification emails before requesting more codes.

Is using temporary email legal?

Using a separate receiving address is a common way to limit spam and protect a main inbox. What matters is how it is used. A website’s terms may require a lasting address, and using any email address to deceive, evade a ban, impersonate someone or commit fraud can break those terms or the law.

This service is for lawful incoming email only, as its terms state. Laws differ between countries; if you need legal certainty about a particular use, check the rules that apply to you.

Use temporary email where it fits

Temporary email works best for one-off messages from websites that accept it: a download link, a short trial where permitted, or a test of your own signup flow. For anything you need to keep, use an address you control long term.

Questions about rejected temporary addresses

Why was my temporary email rejected?

The website most likely matched its domain against a list of disposable domains, or it requires an address it can reach later. Use an address you control if it requires one.

Is there a temporary email that every website accepts?

No service can promise that. Each website decides which domains it accepts, and the lists change.

Is it illegal to use temporary email?

Using a separate address is generally not unlawful in itself. Using any address for fraud, impersonation or to break a website’s rules is a different matter, and laws vary by country.
